  1. Educational 4 Star Review

Posted by on 17th Dec 2015

I like this coloring book very much. Each year for several years, I have bought one or more copies to give as Christmas presents to young boys in the community and to put in the Toys for Tots box. I pair it with a set of colored pencils. Each page of this coloring book has a paragraph or more of text about the Confederate soldier, thus this book is an educational coloring book.

Nothing made by human hands is without flaw. Two only that I know of from my experience with this book: 1) On the "Confederate Officers" page, the Austrian knots for captains and for field officers, are mislabeled. 2) A page of the book is devoted to each of "Confederate Indians" and "Mexican Confederates." In my opinion, a page should be devoted also to Black Confederates. There were more free blacks in the South than in the North. They were enrolled in the army. Though there seems to have been some variability from community to community as to how actively they were recruited and as to whether they were enrolled in the army or the home guard, there is no doubt that many blacks served in the Confederate Army. Nineteen from my county alone (population at that time: 6,000, 4% black) served in the cavalry.
